Artist statement

My name is Maaran Ramakrishnan, and I am from Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu in India. The medium I use is 3D Animation. I mainly use Maya, Z-brush and Substance painter. I enjoy character animation and experimenting with 2D textures in 3D animation. I do this by editing normal maps in substance painter, and using the toon shader in Maya. I am also constantly searching for new ways to create the 2D effects. I like making movies about human relationships, how we affect, influence, hate, and love each other. I also enjoy digging up stories that were censored in India, due to religious taboos, cultural prejudices, and some edited out of the canon during the colonisation of India by the British. I grew up with Indian cinema that misrepresents minorities, and re-enforces harmful stereotypes. These ideologies were normalised and practised widely due to this. This cemented my belief that entertainment is political. Entertainment shapes morality which shapes culture and as a result shapes policies. Cinema isn’t just a source of entertainment, it is a method for indoctrination. I want to be an artist who is mindful of the part I play in entertaining people.
